DAYS Newcomer Al Calderon Chats About His Salem Debut As Javi
Al Calderon with his Salem cousin, Cherie Jimenez (Gabi)
Al Calderon is place to make his Days of Our Lives debut on Monday, October 28. He’ll be playing the role of Javi Hernandez, a cousin of Galen Gering’s Rafe and Cherie Jimenez’s Gabi. The actor, a native of Extended Island, NY whose singing aspirations led him to be cast on X Factor in 2013 and who booked a role in Grotesquerie shortly after landing his DAYS gig, opened up about joining the Salem ranks in a new interview with TV Insider.
The New Guy In Town
Calderon shared with the outlet that Javi comes to Salem in the wake of his mother’s death. “He’s ready to commence over,” the player noted. He revealed that he felt a kinship to the character in that regard, having been through a similar loss. “My mom passed away in 2020 and she was my best friend in the world.”
Javi is an openly homosexual character, and Calderon is proud to take that on. “It’s a large responsibility but I feel honored to be able to be a part of something that might change someone’s perspective,” the player noted. He also teased that Javi’s love life will blossom in Salem, praising the DAYS
I’ve watched “Hello Again” and it’s a little bit strange because it’s mostly about… sex. I can’t even say it’s about love, maybe a minute about relationships but anyway it’s shown through sex. There are ten stories about different people rendezvous in different situations and making out, stories arise in different times and different places, in every next story appears one character from the previous part, also, a part of jewellery with a red gem (it’s alternative in different fragments – a brooch, a bracelet, a ring) goes through all the movie (or at least most of it). All this is supposed to be representing the connection of times. Some of the scenes are problematic but I’m too tired to communicate about it. What I want to talk about is a representation. From ten stories at least three are gay (two gay and one female homosexual to be precise) and there’s a prostituted personality which in the first story is showed as a woman and in the last as a man and it’s played by a male player, so the character themselves feels like a gender non-conforming one. What I also liked (yes, I checked it) all the lgbtq+ and bisexual men are played by gay or bisexual actors – astounding, I can’t even produce a joke like “that’s how straight men imag
Get to Know Javi Hernandez: ‘Days of Our Lives’ Newbie Al Calderon Introduces Rafe & Gabi’s Cousin
If Al Calderon looks familiar, it could be from his run on X Factor in 2013, or from his recent appearance in Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie. But on October 28, the soap world will know him as Days of our Lives’ Javi Hernandez, cousin of Rafe (Galen Gering) and Gabi (Cherie Jimenez).
While Calderon couldn’t be more thrilled to be on Days, he wasn’t as excited when the opportunity first came his way. “Candidly, I was appreciate , ‘A soap opera? Really?’” he recalls. “And my manager was like, ‘Al, just try it. Do your thing. You’re gonna be amazing.’ ”
Calderon sent a self-tape, scored a callback, and then met with casting director Marnie Saitta over Zoom. “I think as actors, our validation really matters,” he notes. “Booking the job is validation and when you don’t get that, or it feels few and far between, especially over the past couple of years with COVID and then the [writers/actors] strikes, it really takes a toll. So, I had a really special experience with Marnie that I’ll never forget. She stopped me middle of the scene and she was l
