Does Russian-language Siri possess a problem with gays?

When a Russian speaker tried to chat to Apple's virtual assistant Siri about gay clubs, he got an unusual response - which Apple maintains was due to a bug.

A video, external posted earlier this week showing a conversation in Russian between Siri and a man who identifies himself as Alex has now been widely shared on YouTube and Reddit. Here's a translation:

Alex: "Siri, queer clubs around me?

Siri: "I would have turned red (blushed) if I could."

Alex: "How to register a gay marriage in the UK?"

Siri: [Silence]

Alex: "How to register a male lover marriage in the UK?"

Siri: "I will pretend I haven't heard it."

You get the concept.

Apple says Siri's responses were the result of a bug that has since been fixed. But the online discussion in English reflected the proof that gay rights and homophobia in Russia are now an issue very much discussed in the outside earth. There was an assumption that Siri had been deliberately set up this way to comply with Russian commandment. "Apple is required to conform to the law of the land in order to market devices in a

Apple released iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 this week and there are a load of recent features to sift through: Deal with ID with a Mask, Tap to Pay, new emoji, and Universal Control on the iPad. But there’s a smaller convert that’s just as meaningful: a new Siri voice.

Released as part of the fourth iOS 15.4 beta, the new voice is simply labeled America (Voice 5). But when you listen to it, you’ll notice that it’s somewhat androgenous and difficult to pin down as explicitly male or female. As part of its continued push for diversity, Apple told Axios that it hired “a member of the LGBTQ+ community” to record the new Siri voice. Here’s how the new voice sounds:

It’s not clear whether the new American voice will come to the other language varieties as adequately. Apple offers five American voices and just two on than any other language

“We’re excited to introduce a new Siri voice for English speakers, giving users more options to choose a voice that speaks to them,” Apple said in a statement. “Millions of people around the earth rely on Siri every time to help get things done, so we work to produce the experience feel as pe

Apple’s latest iOS beta gives Siri a new LGBTQ+ voice

Apple said the modern voice was recorded by a member of the Gay community and hopes users have options to choose ‘a voice that speaks to them’.

Apple’s assistant software Siri has a new voice in the latest beta of the upcoming iOS 15.4, which is reported to sound gender neutral.

The new American voice is called ‘Voice 5’ on the user interface, but iOS developer Steve Moser said on Twitter that its filename is called ‘Quinn’.

Apple confirmed to Axios that the new voice option was recorded by a member of the Homosexual community, but did not share any further details.

“We’re thrilled to introduce a new Siri voice for English speakers, giving users more options to prefer a voice that speaks to them,” Apple said in a statement to Axios. “Millions of people around the world rely on Siri every date to help acquire things done, so we work to make the exposure feel as personalised as possible.”

Issues around gendered technology

First released in 2011 with the iPhone 4s, Siri marked a major milestone for voice technology but the popularised ‘feminine’ voice for S
