LGBTQIA Resource Center Glossary
GLOSSARY
The terms and definitions below are always evolving, modifying and often intend different things to different people. They are provided below as a starting point for discussion and understanding. This Glossary has been collectively built and created by the staff members of the LGBTQIA Resource Center since the early 2000s.
These are not universal definitions. This glossary is provided to support give others a more thorough but not entirely comprehensive understanding of the significance of these terms. You may even consider asking someone what they mean when they use a word, especially when they use it to describe their persona. Ultimately it is most important that each individual describe themselves for themselves and therefore also define a designation for themselves.
“If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive.” -Audre Lorde
This glossary contains terms, such as ableism and disability, that may not be considered directly related to identities of sexuality or gender. These terms are crucial to acknowledge as part of our mission to test all forms of oppress
A 'unicorn' or 'unicorning' is London slang for consuming nitrous oxide from a balloon around shortly (normally 5 - 10 minutes) after having snorted a line of the illegal substance ketamine. Ketamine is wrongly known to be horse tranquilizer and symbolises the horse part of the unicorn. The balloon symbolizes the horn of the unicorn. To say 'praise the unicorn' before inhaling the nitrous oxide is very common part of the ritual.
Unicorning can also refer to the short but intense trip like state an individual is in when having combined both drugs.
'Let's do a unicorn!' or 'We were unicorninga lotlast weekend.'

Gender Identity: One’s internal perception of being male, female, neither of these, both, or another gender(s). Everyone has a gender identity, including you. For transgender people, their sex assigned at birth and their own internal sense of gender identity are not the same. Female, woman, and teen and male, male, and boy are also not necessarily linked to each other but are just six usual gender identities.
Gender Expression/Presentation: The physical manifestation of one’s gender persona through clothing, hairstyle, voice, body shape, etc. Many gender diverse people seek to make their gender expression (how they look) match their gender identity (who they are), rather than their sex assigned at birth.
Sex Assigned at Birth: The assignment and classification of people as male, female, intersex, or another sex based on a combination of anatomy, hormones, chromosomes. It is important we don’t simply exploit “sex” because of the vagueness of the definition of sex and its place in transphobia. Chromosomes are frequently used to determine sex from prenatal karyotyping (although not as often as genitalia). Chromosomes do not always determine genitalia, sex, or gender.
