Say “Greece” to the travelling LGBT community and chances are most of them will think of Mykonos or Lesvos (aka Lesbos), but Crete — birthplace of Zeus, home to the Minoan civilization and the largest of the Greek islands — has much to offer the gay and lesbian traveller. Whether one’s interest is archaeology, lazing on the beach or seeing the sights, Crete impresses the visitor with its sheer size and variety of landscapes.
To put Crete in perspective: Mykonos, at approximately 100 square kilometres, is about 50 percent bigger than Manhattan; Lesvos, at 1,630 square kilometres, is about half the size of Rhode Island. Crete, at more than 8,000 square kilometres, is 80 times bigger than Mykonos and bigger than the state of Delaware, but without so many people: its population is slightly more than 600,000 people, although it has several million olive trees and there are quite a few goats.
What should be clear from this is that Crete is a big island and you are not going to see it all in one day. Indeed, I have lived here for 10 years and came to Crete on holiday six times in the three years before that and I still haven’t seen everything.

Most people begin their trip in the capital (at Heaklion Airport). We recommend you stay a scant days here to take in the gay beaches and bars of Heraklion. Rent a auto and explore the villages south of the Island for a more legitimate island experience. Dine great good from local tavernas and discover secluded beaches with a shade of blue that will stay with you long after your holiday has ended.
While the local gay scene is discreet, you will find busy bars and gay warm cafes and restaurants along the north coast of Crete. The gay lock scene and nightlife on Crete island is centered in its capital capital, Heraklion.

Crete was one of our first vacations as a homosexual couple and although there isn’t a huge gay scene in Crete we felt very welcome on this attractive island and contain returned many times since!
Crete is the largest island in Greece offering everything from beautiful pliable sand beaches, to rich historical sights, a thriving nightlife scene and mountains inland to investigate by car.
During our trips we had no issues creature gay in Crete and felt particularly comfortable around the touristy areas. The most popular destinations in Crete for gay travellers are typically Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, and Agios Nikolaos, as good as Malia (where there is a young party crowd).
Crete has thousands of visitors from all over the planet every year and gay travel around Greece in general is very accepted with the likes of Mykonos and Athens for example (although do review out the smaller islands like the beautiful Ios!).
