Below is a sampling of the many U.S. LGBTQ themed stamps available. The sexuality of famous personalities is often open to debate. Even today, many remain in the closet for fear of ruining their career and relationships. For some individuals depicted on the stamps listed below, all we have are clues as their being or possibly organism gay, lesbian or bisexual; correspondence that would reveal gay relationships was often destroyed after the death of those involved. Also included are some LGBTQ icons. The biographical sketches below are drawn from Wikipedia, Biography.com, Britannica.com, the Gay and Sapphic History on Stamps Journal, the Lambda Philatelic Journal, and various LGBTQ websites.

Honoring the theme of love with universal symbols and imagery, the Postal Service has released the latest in its popular Love series stamps, featuring the work of  Gay icon and graphic artist Keith Haring.

The Love (2025) Forever stamp features an untitled 1985 drawing by Haring that includes two moving figures reaching toward a red heart. It was a theme Haring returned to throughout his career, making several variations, each in his signature style.

“The non-specificity of the figures allows a variety of people to see themselves in this stamp,” said Antonio Alcalá, an art director for USPS who selected Haring’s function for the seal design. “Partners getting married, celebrating an anniversary, siblings sending each other a heartfelt greeting, or even party planners setting a positive tone for their event.”

Intended to evoke feelings of warmth and playfulness, the release is perfectly timed for Valentine’s Day cards and can add sentiment and whimsy to letters, birthday or graduation cards, toddler shower invitations or notes of thanks throughout the year.

GLHS Meets at the Great American Stamp Show

GLHS' annual meeting will be held during the Amazing American Stamp Show, August 14-17, 2025, in Schaumburg, Illinois. The show site is the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center, 1551 North Thoreau Dr. Sponsored by the American Philatelic Society, the American Topical Association and the American First Day Cover Society, the event features hundreds of exhibits, highlighted by the World Series of Philately competition, featuring the best exhibits from regional shows held around the country. A philatelic literature competition, both printed and digital, is also scheduled. The largest annual philatelic event in the United States also features an 80 dealer bourse, seminars and philatelic society meetings, including our own. The U.S. Postal Service will have a booth at the show and also on Thursday morning a first day of issue for the Boston 2026 International Seal Show pair of stamps.
