There's something I've always wanted to ask you, and people who read this column know very well how I feel professionally about Skip Bayless. In a book on the Cowboys in the 1990s, Bayless had a unsubstantiated claim that you were queer . Over the years you have generally not responded to this but I did read in the Dallas Morning News a couple of years ago that you said, and I quote: “I've not physically seen Skip Bayless since that time. That was in '95. And I still kind of wonder what I might do to him when I do see him.” How much anger today do you feel about what was written in that book?

Aikman: I’m upset about it because it was made up and there was nothing reliable about anything that was insinuated. And he did it, as he does everything, just for attention. I am probably more upset because I probably should have responded to it at the occasion it was going on. The advice to me was “Hey, just don’t address it. It’s not worth it. It doesn’t make any sense. It’s ridiculous. All it’

LOS ANGELES -- David Kopay peers out the window of his ninth-floor apartment in West Hollywood and studies the remarkable view: the tumbling Hollywood Hills, down to the Christmas-treed uppermost of Tower Records, out to the Los Angeles skyline and the Pacific Ocean beyond.

He wonders where all the years went.

It has been 23 NFL seasons since Kopay, a running back for five teams in nine seasons, stunned the sports planet by coming out as a queer. He was the first major professional team-sport athlete to do so, but few have followed. Guard Roy Simmons, who played 58 games for the Giants and Redskins from 1979-83, came out on the Phil Donahue Exhibit in 1992, but that was it.

"I'm the token queer,'' Kopay muses. "I'm it.''

The belief that somewhere between 5 and 10 percent of the general population is homosexual suggests that 75 to 150 of the NFL's 1,500 players are closeted.

Troy Aikman has denied persistent rumors he is gay.

"Think about this,'' says Atlanta wide receiver Terance Mathis. "You may have three, four gay guys on your team and not even know it.''

Says Kopay, "Of course, that is what I want to believe, and yet I don't se

Jim Dent covered it in his book on Jerry Jones, which was published after the 1994 season. Skip Bayless took it further in his book a year later.

Switzer came to watch Aikman work out, and was so impressed he offered a scholarship on the spot, promising to revamp the offense. It was hardly a pro style assault, and after Aikman was injured, against Jimmy Johnson's Miami Hurricanes, the offense reverted back to full blown wishbone. Oklahoma went on to win the national title that year. When Aikman told Switzer he wanted to transfer and gave him a list of schools, Switzer personally called UCLA coach Terry Donahue. There was no animosity then.

But Aikman, who thrived on order and discipline, disliked Switzer's laid back ways when he became the Dallas coach. The relationship grew frostier. Kevin Williams was constantly screwing up a particular route in practice (something that would never have been allowed under Jimmy Johnson, or in Norv Turner's offense) and Aikman finally unloaded on him, cursing him out either on the sidelines or during a practice. Assistant coach John Blake, a Switzer loyalist, told some reporters
