Wouldnt that make you gay

Is Poetry Gay?

by James Crews

On a flight from San Francisco to Chicago a few years ago, I happened to be reading a book of poetry—Charles Wright’s Negative Blue: Selected Later Poems. I was absorbed, but the female next to me—maybe bored by her own copy of The Da Vinci Code—felt compelled to strike up a conversation about her college-age daughter.

“She’s in school to be a teacher,” the woman said. I caught her eyeing the book now resting facedown on my lap. I was looking down at it too, trying to figure out a way to break off the talk. I didn’t want to hear about how smart her daughter was or that she was free. I didn’t enjoy where this was going.

“Are you in school too?” she asked brightly. She had begun toying with her iPhone as if ready to flip it on any minute and enter my number for her fabulous, well-educated daughter.

I explained that, yes, I was in an MFA program for writing. “I’m a poet,” I confessed. (Why does saying that to strangers always touch like such a confession, a “coming out”?)

“Ohhhhhhh. A poet.” A hand fluttered to her chest. She let out a sigh, seemingly relieved that we might finally go in into a authentic conversation now that this mystery was clear

About

At a age when society is working on becoming more inclusive and accepting of people who do not conform to binary sexual orientation, it is surprising to see memes such as “Wouldn't That Make You Gay?,” a two-panel image macro made from a scene in the 2014 animated Dreamworks film "Penguins of Madagascar."

The premise of this image macro is based on the stale practice of using "gay" as the punchline to a juvenile and bigoted joke.

Origin

The history of this meme dates back to 2018; it first appeared on YouTube as a clumsily edited video depicting a scene when a bunch of penguins having a conversation aboard a life raft, but the dialog featured a nonsensical exchange between former Joined States Presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama about racist speech.

The earliest version as an image macro appeared on Reddit in mid-2019; it did not take long for it to be released as a template, and it was mostly used to tell "gay jokes." In January 2021, however, the template was modified so that the "gay" aspect was dropped in favor of other terms to illustrate awkwardly funny situations. One example invo

At this gesture, most liberally minded people believe that sexual orientation isn’t a choice—from Lady Gaga to the US Supreme Court, the dominant belief is that you are born with your sexuality. But there are still some people on both sides of LGBT issues who believe that homosexuality is a option. Feminist writer Julie Bindel has argued that some people choose to be gay, while many Republican presidential candidates in the US, as well as some Tory politicians in the UK, argue the same, as a way to deny gay people rights.

So let’s just imagine for a moment that this unlikely grouping of radical feminists and homophobes were right. Would anyone choose to be gay? To live a life subject to discrimination and bullying and, in some countries, even violence? Would anyone choose to risk being rejected by his or her hold family? Gay and womxn loving womxn teens are four times more likely to commit suicide than straight kids. Eating disorders, loneliness, substance abuse, and depression are still pervasive among LGBT youth worldwide. Who would want that kind of life?

And aside from issues of discrimina
